Go to the address: www.audacity.sourceforge.net and download Audacity according to your operating system. Audacity is a free recording studio, complete with multi-tracking, effects and multiple audio file export options. Install the program somewhere on your computer with easy access.
Connect your microphone to the "mic-in" jack on your computer. Go to system settings and select it as your recording input. Open "Audacity" and in "Preferences," select "mic-in" for the recording input. In the drop-down menu above the meter with a microphone symbol, select "Start Monitoring." Speak into the mic and observe the recording meters. If they show red when you speak, then it is ready for recording. If they do not show up, select "Mic" from the drop-down menu in the upper-right of the application.
Have your book ready and opened to the place you want to begin recording and press "Record" in Audacity. Read to a point you either want to make a chapter or is the end of what you want recorded and press "Stop." You should see a wave of what was recorded. Press "Play" again and listen to the recording. If you are satisfied, go to "File -> Export" and name the track. Press "OK" and choose the file format you want to save it as, such as MP3 or WAV. Repeat Step 3 as many times as you need for what you want to record.
Insert the blank CD-R into the CD drive. Open your CD creating software and locate the folder in which you saved the recordings. Select and order them and click "Create Disc."
