How to Store Audio Cables

In the recording studio, the signal chain is only as good as the weakest link. One bad element and the sound will suffer, whether it's the microphone, the mic preamp, the compressor, the converters or the audio cables that connect everything together. Along with buying the best cables you can afford, you need to take care of them as well. Incorrectly stored or improperly wound cables can lead to shorts in the wiring and bad sound.

Instructions

    • 1

Take one end of the cable in your left hand and slide your right hand about two feet down the length of the cable. Pull the cable toward your left hand in an underhand motion and transfer the cable from your right to your left to form a circular loop about one foot in diameter.

    • 2

Slide your right hand down the cable another two feet with your palm facing down. Twist your hand to the right so your palm faces upward and the cable coming from your left hand is over your right wrist. Move your right hand to your left hand keeping your palm up at all times and exchange the cable from your right to your left to make the second loop.

    • 3

Slide your right hand down the remaining cable and pull it up to your chest to make the third loop. Alternate between pulling and twisting until you fully wind the cable in your left hand. This method prevents kinks from occurring.

    • 4

Lock the cable down with Velcro cable wraps.

    • 5

Find a space for your pegboard and nail it to the wall with a small hammer. Add cable hooks to the pegboard and store the wound cables on these hooks.
