How to Create Tracks in a Single Music File

When you record live music with your computer or transfer songs from other media such as vinyl, unless you stop the process after each song, you will end up with one big file that includes all the songs you've recorded. Before you burn the music to CD, however, you must insert marks in that big file so that each song becomes a separate track. If you have a professional-level audio-editing program such as WaveLab, SONAR, and Pro Tools, this won't be a problem, but if you don't, freeware such as Audacity does it, too.

Instructions

  1. Marking tracks

    • 1

Download and install Audacity on your computer.

    • 2

Open Audacity, click on the "File" menu, "Open," and then open the audio file that you want to put track marks into.

    • 3

Play the file or scroll to the second song in the audio file where you want a new track mark for the CD.

    • 4

Click "Project," then "Add Label at Selection." Once you've created a new label, you can type in the name of the song you want to export to a CD.

    • 5

Repeat the process for the rest of the audio file, breaking it into as many tracks as you want.

    • 6

Click "Save as" and save the file as a new music file. Your original file is preserved.

    • 7

To burn the tracks onto a CD, click "File" and then "Export Multiple" to export the tracks as separate files to burn to your CD.
