How to Go From a Music CD to an LP

The vinyl LP, or long-playing album, is once more becoming a popular medium for listening to music. Despite its decline in the past years with the introduction of newer forms of media, music listeners are once again going back to their vinyl roots. Although vinyl is slowly gaining more fans, the practice of converting CDs to LPs is not as commonplace as burning compact discs or ripping MP3s, since the process tends to be more complex and technically involved. Yet for the ardent music fan, all you need is a few resources to convert a CD into an LP.

Instructions

  1. How to Record your own LP with a Vinyl Cutter

    • 1

Purchase a vinyl cutting machine (see "Tips") and blank vinyl records.

    • 2

Prepare the music tracks to be cut. Songs are individually cut into your vinyl record, and choosing the right tracks in the right order is essential in creating a good listening experience. Bass-filled tracks are usually located at the center of the record to prevent it from skipping since these create a much narrower groove. (Tips for mixing your own vinyl records are listed in "Resources.)

    • 3

Plug in your CD player to your vinyl cutting machine via an input/output cable. Place the blank vinyl record and position your stylus at the beginning of the record. Start the cutting process once you begin to play your CD tracks.

    • 4

Dust off the excess vinyl cut from the record and test your newly recorded LP for imperfections.
