How do I Use a Tascam US-2400 With Nuendo?

The US-2400 is a digital audio workstation (DAW) controller manufactured by Tascam. It is designed to seamlessly integrate with a number of DAWs, including ProTools, Sonar, Digital Performer and Logic. Although not shipped with preset controller values for use with Steinberg's Nuendo DAW, the US-2400 still functions well as a remote control for this application.

Instructions

  1. Setup

    • 1

Connect the US-2400 to your computer via USB cable, then connect its supplied AC adapter and plug the adapter into a standard wall outlet. Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later will automatically recognize the US-2400; Windows XP will install its own drivers for the device. If the US-2400 isn't automatically recognized on either system, visit the Tascam website (you can find a link in the Resources section of this guide) for additional drivers or firmware updates.

    • 2

Open a Nuendo project and select "Device Setup" from the "Devices" menu. In the window that pops up, select "MIDI Port Setup" in the left column.

    • 3

Deactivate the check box in the "All MIDI Inputs" column on the row for the MIDI input to which you've connected the US-2400 (it will be something such as "USB Audio Device"). The "State" column will now read "Inactive." Click "OK" and exit the Device Setup.

    Assign Functions

    • 4

Reopen the Device Setup dialog via the "Devices" menu. Then click on the plus symbol in the upper left of that window and choose "Generic Remote" from the list that drops down. Select the "Generic Remote" from the left column and select "USB Audio Device" from the "MIDI Input" drop-down menu on the top right to begin editing the MIDI controllers for the US-2400.

    • 5

Click on the first row of the top table, which should have the Control Name "Fader 1." This will select that Control Name for modification.

    • 6

Move the leftmost fader on your US-2400, then hit the "Learn" button on the left. This will change the value in the "Address" column of the Fader 1 row, in effect teaching Nuendo that the leftmost fader on the US-2400 should control Fader 1, which is not the default setting.

    • 7

Select the first row in the bottom table, which should have the Control Name "Fader 1." Note that the corresponding "Value/Action," "Channel/Category" and "Device" columns are set so that "Fader 1" will raise and lower the volume fader for channel 1 on the mixer. These settings can be changed as desired so that any controller can affect any available parameter in Nuendo.

    • 8

Click "OK" in the Device Setup window. Display the VST Mixer by pressing F3 or selecting it from the "Devices" menu. Move the fader on the US-2400 and make sure that it's raising and lowering the fader for channel 1.

    • 9

Reenter the Device Setup and add functions to all the US-2400 controllers you wish to use by similarly assigning each one a Control Name and assigning that Control Name to a desired function.
