How to Record an Audio From a Cassette to a Computer With No Sound Card Line-In

Cassette tapes are still with us, even though the format has been outmoded for a long time. If you find yourself looking for a way to consolidate and update your old tape collection, uploading the cassettes to your computer is one option. Connecting to a computer's sound card line-in jack is a common way to accomplish this, but there are alternative means of recording audio from a cassette to a computer.

  • Computer
  • Audio recording software
  • Cassette player

Instructions

    • 1

      Insert the RCA audio ends of an RCA-to-USB adapter into the RCA input jacks in a cassette player. The red plug is for the right channel and the white plug is for the left.

      Insert the USB end of the RCA-to-USB cable into a free USB port on a computer.

      Insert a cassette tape into the cassette player.

      Plug the casette player's AC power cord into a power outlet and turn on the cassette player.

      Open audio recording software on your computer.

      Click the "record" button in the audio recording software.

      Press "play" on the cassette player to begin playback of the cassette tape.

      Adjust the levels using the level controls on the cassette player, RCA-to-USB adapter and in the audio recording program.

      Click "stop" in the audio recording program and close the audio file.

      Press "stop" on the cassette player and cue the cassette to the beginning of the portion you wish to record.

      Click "record" in the audio recording software and press "play" on the cassette player to begin recording and playback.

      Click "stop" in the audio recording software when the portion of the cassette you wish to record has finished.

      Select "Save As" from the File menu in the audio recording program.

      Enter a name and save location for the audio file and click "Save" when done. The audio from the cassette player is now saved onto your computer.
