Find the mics that you plan to use for recording and plug them into your computer or mixing board.
Have the musicians set up their instruments, then mic them accordingly, i.e. drums, amplifiers, etc.
Have the band play and listen, preferably in a separate room, to the sound over your close-field monitor speakers or through your headphones.
Listen to a CD of a band that sounds good to you and try to recreate the sound of the instruments on that CD.
Make a short-duration recording of the band and play it back, paying attention to the different frequencies, i.e. the mid-range and lows of each instrument.
Adjust the equalization highs, mids and lows on each microphone channel of the mixing board, virtual mixer or equalizer until you get the desired sound.
