Install a digital recording program. The Lexicon Omega allows you to connect your instruments to your PC, but you will still need to record using audio software. The Omega package includes a copy of Cubase LE 4, which is compatible with both Mac OS X and Windows. You can install this software from the installation disk, or you can use another program, such as Logic, Pro Tools, GarageBand or a simple and free program such as Audacity or Qtractor (see "Resources" below).
Connect your Lexicon Omega to your PC. Included with the device is a USB cable that features a rectangular "USB A" connector and a square "USB B" connector. Insert the "USB B" connector into the back of your Lexicon Omega and insert the "USB A" connector into a free USB port on your computer.
Connect your instruments and microphones to your Lexicon Omega. Connect a maximum of four instruments to the "Line" jacks on the back of the device and connect XLR microphones to the two "Mic" jacks.
Connect a pair of headphones to the "Headphone" jack on the front of the Omega and sample the sound of each instrument and microphone. Before recording, you will need to check your levels and ensure that you achieve the optimum balance for your inputs. Speak into each microphone and play each instrument while listening and watch the "Peak" meters on your Omega; if any of the "Peak" lights flash red or if any of your inputs sound too loud, lower the volume on the corresponding "Line" input by turning the knob counterclockwise. Turn an input knob clockwise to add gain, or volume.
Set up your USB buses. On the front of your Omega, you will find three "USB Assign" buttons that allow you to direct how your inputs will record. Although you can record up to six inputs (four instruments and two microphones) simultaneously, you can only record onto four individual tracks, or layers, which means that you may have to group some tracks; the "USB Assign" buttons allow you to do this. For example, by assigning "Mic 1" and "Mic 2" to USB 1-2, and then assigning "Line 1" and "Line 2" to USB 3-4, you will have two microphones and two instruments recorded onto four individual tracks. Click the buttons to make your selections.
Open your audio-recording program. If you are using Cubase, select "Devices" and then "Device Setup" on your menu bar, click "VST Audiobay" and choose "Lexicon Omega" as your input device. If you are using a different program, open your "Preferences" or "Options," select your audio input options and then choose "Lexicon Omega" as your "Input," "Line-In" or "I/O" source.
Click "Record" on your software window and begin recording your demo. To monitor your recording, connect headphones to your PC, or connect headphones to your Lexicon Omega and designate the Omega as your audio output source (within your "Options" or "Preferences" panel). When you finish playing, click "Stop." If you need to add further layers to your recording, click the "New Track" button on your software, return to the beginning of the song and record the additional music.
Repeat this process for three to five songs, the length of a typical demo. After you finish recording, you can add audio effects using the "Effects" menu in your software window. Cubase includes effects options in the left column, while other programs may include effects on the menu bar or in a separate "Inserts" menu.
