How to Replace the CD Drive on a Tascam Recorder

Tascam has been a leader in recording technology development since the early 1970s. Many newer digital recording devices include an on-board CD burner, which allows for easy and convenient CD duplication as you record songs and demos on your recorder. In the event that your Tascam recorder's CD drive stops working, it can leave you stuck without this convenience. Fortunately, you can replace the CD drive yourself, but it requires that you dismantle the recorder. The bad news is that doing this yourself may void your recorder's warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Save all current songs to the recorder's internal hard drive. Follow your specific Tascam recorder's power-down procedure. Unplug your recorder's power cord from the nearest electrical outlet and from the back of the recorder. Loosen and remove the Phillips-head screws from the recorder's top casing.

    • 2

Place the recorder facedown, so the input/output (I/O) jacks are positioned upward. Remove all Phillips-head screws from the bottom side of your recorder.

    • 3

Grasp each side of the recorder's bottom housing. Tilt the bottom casing upward from the top, but don't try to remove the housing completely. There are still several wires attached to the main circuit board inside the housing. Set the housing so it is next to the rest of the recorder with the cables still attached.

Locate the large CD drive inside the recorder. Remove the four Phillips-head screws fastening the drive in place. Unplug the two data and power cables from the back of the drive. Lift the CD drive out of the recorder and set it aside.

    • 5

Place the new CD drive inside the recorder. Align the four screw holes on the drive with the four screw holes inside the recorder. Replace the four Phillips-head screws fastening the drive in place. Reconnect the data and power cables to the connectors on the back of the new CD drive.

Place the bottom housing back on top of the recorder. Fasten the bottom housing to the recorder by reattaching the removed Phillips-head screws. Place the recorder faceup, and replace the Phillips-head screws to the recorder's top housing.
