Band-in-a-Box Tips

Band-in-a-Box is a popular music creation software program created by PG Music. The program is available for Windows and Macintosh operating systems, and is known for its ease of use and flexibility. Band-in-a-Box allows users to enter chord progressions, choose from a musical style, and hear a real-time arrangement of their music, either with MIDI sound files or actual recording of studio musicians assigned to individual tracks.
  1. Generating Solos

    • Many Band-in-a-Box users will be interested to find a method to automatically generate guitar solos and tablature. This is easy in Band-in-a-Box. Simply enter the chord progression you'd like to work with, and find the Soloist menu at the top of your screen. Select "Generate and Play a Solo..." and select a soloist from the next menu. There are a variety of soloists to choose from, including Pat Metheny playing guitar, Herbie Hancock playing electric piano and Bennie Goodman playing clarinet. On the original Soloist menu, click "edit soloist track" and "copy to melody track." To create tablature, find the Melody menu at the top of your screen, followed by Track Type and Guitar.

    Importing MIDI Files

    • If you wish to use a song other than what's included with Band-in-a-Box and you don't feel like creating your own, you'll be glad to know that any MIDI file you can find on the Internet can be imported into Band-in-a-Box for manipulation. Search the Internet for MIDI files and download them to your computer. Most MIDI files are free of charge. In Band-in-a-Box, find the File menu at the top of your screen and select "Import Chords From MIDI file." Select the "Change" button and find your MIDI tracks on your hard drive. A menu with a variety of options will open, including number of bars to import, the channel including the bass part, musical style presets, melody and soloist channels, and the ability to allow seventh chords or sustained chords. Click "Interpret Chords Now" to listen to Band-in-a-Box's interpretation of the MIDI file.

    Exporting WAV Files

    • When you're happy with the music you've created in Band-in-a-Box, you'll want to export a WAV file that you can burn to a disc, upload to the Internet, and share with your friends. This process is easy in Band-in-a-Box. First, turn off any programs on your computer that might produce sound while you're exporting your file. In the Windows recording control, turn on "stereo mix" and click the WAV button in your Band-in-a-Box toolbar. Let the song play through, and find your WAV file in your Band-in-a-Box directory.
