Connect an audio interface to your computer. Typically this calls for either a Firewire or USB cable, depending on the make and model of the audio interface. On laptops, Firewire and USB ports are located on the side. On desktop machines they are typically located on either the front or rear panel. The interface converts audio signals into digital signals, so that you can record live instruments and vocals into the Mixcraft 4 digital interface.
Connect a MIDI controller to the "MIDI In" port on the audio interface. Typically this calls for either a Firewire or USB connector, depending on make and model. The "MIDI IN" port is typically located on the rear of the interface.
Double-click the Mixcraft 4 desktop icon. If you don't have a desktop icon you can open the program from the "Start" menu on PC, or from the "Applications" folder if using a Mac.
Connect an audio sound source to the audio interface. If recording guitar, connect a 1/4-inch instrument jack cable to the guitar output socket. Connect the other end to the jack input on the front of the audio interface. If recording vocals or acoustic instruments, such as lute, use a microphone. Connect the female end of an XLR cable to the microphone and connect the other end to the XLR input jack on the front of the interface.
Audition the sound source. Play or sing as loud as you intend to record. If the red LED warning light flashes, the signal is too loud and will distort when recorded. Turn down the "Gain" dial to fix this.
Click "File" and select "New Audio Track".
Press "Record." Play or sing your part. When finished, press "Stop".
Click "File" and select "New MIDI Track". This brings up a new recording channel. This channel is assigned to the MIDI controller.
Double-click the box on the left of the channel strip to rename the track. For easy reference, name the track for the instrument sound you are using, for example, "Trumpets."
Hit "Record" and play your part. Once finished, hit "Stop".
