How to Record With a Roland VS2000

The Roland VS-2000 is a digital studio workstation. It has 10 input channels and a 40-channel mixer, allowing you to record up to eight channels simultaneously. Once recorded, you can "bounce" multiple tracks to a single channel to make room for more audio. It also features a variety of on-board effects for pre-production and post-production work, such as mixing and equalization. The VS-2000 has a clear and logically laid-out display for intuitive recording.

Instructions

Connect a sound source. The VS-2000 has eight XLR inputs and eight 1/4-inch jack inputs. XLR inputs are typically for microphone connection, while the 1/4-inch jacks are for electric guitar and bass. If you are recording electric guitar, you can use a microphone to capture the sound of the amplifier as an alternative to directly connecting to the VS-2000.

Connect speakers or headphones. To hear what you are playing, the VS 2000 must output the audio to either speakers or headphones. Jacks for both are on the rear panel.

    • 3

Assign pre-production effects. Press the "FX" button under the effect you want to assign. You can assign up to six separate effects to any one channel. For example, press the "FX" button under "Reverb," then hold it down and use the arrow buttons to scroll to a channel number. By selecting a channel number, you configure the effect so the selected channel becomes the destination. This is known as an "effects send."

Audition the levels. Once you're happy with the setup, play your instrument or sing into the microphone. Monitor the LED display on the channel strip. If the red LED warning light flashes, the input signal is too strong. A signal that is too strong causes unwanted distortion on the recording. Slide the channel "Gain" fader down to reduce the signal and prevent distortion.

    • 5

Press "Record." Once you've auditioned each active channel and have all the effects you want, you're ready to record. When you are finished, the audio will be stored on the VS-2000's internal memory.

Group the tracks. To make room for more recording, you can group, or "bounce," multiple tracks onto one hard-disk channel. This converts all tracks into one. This is useful if you want to apply the same parameters to multiple tracks, such as backing vocals. Press "CH Edit" on all channels that you want to group and hold it so that it lights up. A wire icon appears on the LED display, running from each selected track. Scroll through the channel list using up and down arrows to select the hard-disk track where you want to send the grouped tracks.
