Open your preferred digital audio workstation, or "DAW," for example Logic or Cubase. The most recent session will automatically open. If this isn't the session you require, click "File" and "Open New." Select the required session from the drop-down menu.
Click the "S" icon on the channel strip for the vocal to solo it. Soloing mutes all other audio and lets you heart the vocal in isolation.
Click "Effects" and select "Delay." Typical workstations have various echo presets, including "Tape Echo" and "Slap-back." The former is a warm, vintage sounding echo suitable for ethereal, ambient vocals. The latter is a bright, immediate effect that emulates the sound of singing in a tiled room.
Click on a delay preset in the drop-down menu. This opens the echo interface in a new window. It instantly applies the preset echo effects to your vocal. Audition multiple echoes from the menu until you find the right type of echo, from which point you can tweak the various echo parameters.
Adjust the "Time" parameter on the echo interface. The time of the echo influences how quickly the sound repeats. Use your personal preference to find an echo speed that suits the mood of the song. For a subtle delay sound, match the speed with the tempo of the song. You needn't set it to the exact beats per minute, or "BPM" tempo, but setting it to a multiple thereof keeps the repeats in time with the song.
Adjust the "Feedback" parameter. Feedback controls the intensity of the echo. Set to maximum, the echo will keep repeating indefinitely, eventually creating an uncontrollable "wall of sound" effect that will dominate your entire vocal. For a deep, prominent echo set the parameter to around 60 percent. For a bright, lighter echo set it to around 30 percent.
Tweak the "Mix" parameter. This governs the ratio of affected and unaffected vocal. Set it high so the echo is more audible than the original sound, set it low for the opposite. Set it to around 50 per cent for a balanced blend.
Click "Save" on the delay interface when you find an echo sound that enhances the vocal.
