How to Create Sound Effects

Creating a film involves different projects brought together to make the final product. Scripting, filming and editing are just a few of the things that are necessary to make a complete film. No matter what type of film is being made, there is usually the need for some form of sound effects. These are actually special affects used to create sound. They are quite easy to do and can be a lot of fun. Read the following instructions on how to create sound effects and have fun when creating your next film.

  • Duffel bag and clothes
  • Plastic cellophane and twigs
  • Sandbox filled with sand or gravel
  • Piece of plexiglas
  • Coconut shells
  • Staple gun
  • Piece of wood or metal
  • Tin box

      It is very easy to create the sound effect of a body hitting the floor. This is done by filling a duffel bag with clothes and then dropping it on the floor.

      Create the sound of a fireplace by crinkling plastic cellophane. Add to this sound by snapping twigs which will sound like a crackling fireplace.

      Slap your hands together to create the sound of slapping someone in the face. Snapping a carrot in half will sound like a bat hitting a person.

      Make a hoof box by filling a sandbox with sand or gravel. Walk on it to create the sound of walking in the woods.

      Create the sound of thunder by shaking a piece of plexiglas. Create the sound of birds flying by flapping a pair of heavy gloves.

      Create the sound of a walking horse with coconut shells. Cut the coconut in half and clean out the center. Stuff the center with padding. Walk the coconut shells across a counter for the sound effect.

      Staple into a piece of wood or metal with a staple gun. This will create a real shotgun sound.

      Make a crash box for crashing sounds. Use an old tin box, such as a popcorn or cookie tin box, and fill it with rocks, broken glass and pieces of wood. Glue on the top of the box and roll on the ground. It will create a crashing sound.
