How to Reuse a Portion of a Recording

Multitrack recording allows you to use and manipulate multiple tracks of a recording and reuse them for various projects. If you have unreleased tracks , you may be able to reuse certain portions to save yourself time on new projects. Instead of looking for a proper sample or sound, you may be able to reuse old sounds you were happy with during those particular sessions. When you have put forth the effort, there is no reason not to reuse sounds and audio tracks you created which you think will work with newer projects in the studio.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a portion of the drum beat and use it for a new song where you loop the section in question. There may be a beat from an old song that can be reused as a pattern in a drum loop. Looping continually plays the same measure of audio over and over again. If the portion of the drum beat is interesting and you feel you can write a song around it, reuse it in this manner with a looping program, such as Sony's ACID or FruityLoops, now known as FL Studio.

Reuse the solo in one song for another song. When multitrack recording, all the individual audios files are recorded separately and individual tracks, such as solos and other portions can be reused in other songs. If the tempos match up and the key is the same, you can use a melodic solo from one song in another. Copy the individual portion and paste it into a new track in the new session.

Reuse the kick drum sound from one recording for a new project. When you trigger drums, the audio program uses MIDI signals to trigger a sound. Use a bass drum sample from a previous recording to replace the drum hits on another track. Perform this manually or use a drum program, such as EZDrummer or Drumagog, to replace the kick drum sound with one from a previous recording.

Reuse a rhythm guitar track on one song for a new song. Many audio editing suites can change the tempo of an audio track without changing the pitch of the notes. You can import a track, such as a rhythm guitar riff or track and loop it in a new song. This will make the process of creation quicker as you can base the rest of the song off of the old riff.

Remove sound effects and samples from an old recording for use with a new session. Separate, then copy and paste samples that have been used in older songs for use in a new creation. Samples do not have a pitch, so they can be reused from old multitrack sessions. Like other tracks, copy and paste or import into the new session and line up where you think the sample would be most appropriate for the new track. Reusing old samples in this manner is time-efficient as it can save you from wasting hours looking for new, appropriate samples for an audio track.
