How to Hook Up a Guitar to Fast Track

The M-Audio Fast Track is an audio interface that connects instruments and microphones to your computer for recording purposes. The interface is compatible with a variety of audio software programs, including Pro Tools, Logic and GarageBand. Electric guitars -- along with keyboards, bass and other instruments -- connect to Fast Track using a 1/4-inch TRS cable. Fast Track plugs into computers using a USB cable.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect one end of a 1/4-inch TRS cable into your guitar's jack.

    • 2

Plug the other end of the TRS cable into the Fast Track guitar input. Look for an image of a guitar above an input on the front panel.

    • 3

Connect a USB cable to the Fast Track interface. The USB port is on the back panel and is marked "USB."

    • 4

Plug the other end of the USB cable into your computer's USB port. The USB connection powers the Fast Track interface while allowing for data transfer from interface to computer.

    • 5

Adjust the volume knob on your guitar. Turn the knob clockwise to increase the volume signal.

    • 6

Check and adjust the guitar level with the knob marked "Guitar Gain" on the top panel of the Fast Track interface. Play your guitar and turn the gain knob clockwise until the LED marked "Clip" beside the guitar input begins to light. Turn the Guitar Gain knob down again until the Clip LED stops lighting.
