How to Add Delay to Vocals

Delay is an audio effect that approximates the sound of an echo. Typical delay units have a range of parameter controls, enabling you to select the speed, intensity and amount of echoes that occur. Some more sophisticated units permit you to control the mix between the original signal and the delay. Adding delay to a vocal creates a spacious, wide sound, giving a professional-sounding sheen to your recording.

Instructions

  1. Outboard Hardware Unit

    • 1

Connect a patch cable to the patch bay “Send” jack for the delay unit. In order to keep wiring tidy, studios typically hard-wire their hardware to a patch bay, which is hard-wired to the mixing desk. This means rather than running long cables from the hardware to the desk, you connect smaller cables to patches on the desk. Patches typically have a dry-wipe surface where the engineer writes down which patch is connected to which device.

    • 2

Connect the other end of the patch cable to the “Return” jack for the “Aux” channel on the desk.

    • 3

Connect a second patch cable to the “Send” jack for the “Aux” channel.

    • 4

Connect the other end of the second cable to the “Input” jack for the vocal channel. If necessary, consult the desk channel strip to see which channel the vocals are on.

    • 5

      Turn on the delay unit.

    • 6

Hit “Play” on the recording console so you can hear the delay effect in real time.

    • 7

Hit the “Solo” button on the vocal channel so you can hear the vocal in isolation.

    • 8

Adjust the “Delay Time,” “Feedback” and “Mix” controls to control the nature of the delay sound.

    Digital Audio Workstation

    • 9
Digital audio workstations emulate the function of a real studio.

Double-click the desktop icon to launch your digital audio workstation.

    • 10

Click “File,” “Open” and select the relevant song from the drop-down menu.

    • 11

Click on the vocal track to highlight it. This assigns subsequent edits to the vocal only, rather than the entire mix.

    • 12

Open the “Effects” menu and select “Delay.” Hit “Play” on the navigation control panel so you can hear the delay effect in real-time.

    • 13

Adjust the virtual slider dials for each parameter to suit your taste. For a subtle delay, set the “Feedback” parameter to around 20 percent and the “Mix” parameter to around 40 percent.
