How do you add external volume control to an amplifier?

Option 1: Using a potentiometer

1. Purchase a potentiometer (also known as a variable resistor) that has a resistance value that is appropriate for your amplifier. The resistance value of the potentiometer should be higher than the input impedance of your amplifier, but not so high that it significantly reduces the volume.

2. Connect the potentiometer to the input of your amplifier. The positive terminal of the potentiometer should be connected to the positive input terminal of your amplifier, and the negative terminal of the potentiometer should be connected to the negative input terminal of your amplifier.

3. Connect the output of the potentiometer to the input of your speakers. The positive terminal of the potentiometer should be connected to the positive input terminal of your speakers, and the negative terminal of the potentiometer should be connected to the negative input terminal of your speakers.

Option 2: Using an attenuator

1. Purchase an attenuator that has a suitable attenuation range for your amplifier. The attenuation range of the attenuator should be sufficient to reduce the volume of your amplifier to a comfortable level.

2. Connect the attenuator to the input of your amplifier. The positive terminal of the attenuator should be connected to the positive input terminal of your amplifier, and the negative terminal of the attenuator should be connected to the negative input terminal of your amplifier.

3. Connect the output of the attenuator to the input of your speakers. The positive terminal of the attenuator should be connected to the positive input terminal of your speakers, and the negative terminal of the attenuator should be connected to the negative input terminal of your speakers.
