Christian Music Vs. Country Music

Country is a genre of music, while Christian is not a specific genre--it deals with a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Christian songs can be country, and country songs can be Christian. Many artists perform both.
  1. Christian Songs

    • Christian music can directly mention Jesus, or can have themes based on love and other Christian values. The faith of the lyricist is one of the most important aspects of Christian music.

    Country Songs

    • There is no rule of thumb for country lyrics. The musical style sets a song apart as country.

    Types of Christian Music

    • Any genre of music has a Christian counterpart. You'll find Christian artists performing everything from opera to hip hop to hard rock. Christian country and Southern Gospel are very popular.

    Types of Country Music

    • Different types of country music include rockabilly, country soul, country rock, and the classic country and western.

    Gospel Music Association

    • The Gospel Music Association, or GMA, is the authority on Christian music. They hold a convention in Nashville every April, which includes an awards show, the Dove Awards.

    Country Music Association

    • Country music's GMA counterpart is the Country Music Association (CMA), which has over 6,000 members. Their awards show, CMA Awards, is called "Country Music's Biggest Night."
