How to Play Crystal Glasses

One of the easiest instruments to play is found right in your kitchen. A wine glass can double as a musical instrument. Playing wine glasses can be fun and challenging, and it can provide a very haunting melody.

Once you become adept at playing the wine glasses, you can set up many wine glasses and play an entire song. Teach your friends to play, and you can have a symphony.

Instructions

    • 1

Find several crystal wine glasses. You can use a variety of sizes or the same size. Make sure the lip of the glass is fairly thin, as this will help you produce a good tone when you play the glasses.

    • 2

Fill the glasses with small amounts of water. You will produce a higher pitched tone by using less water, a deeper tone with more water. You can use other liquids in the crystal glasses to produce tones, but water works the best because it is cheap, easy to obtain and will not stain if spilled.

    • 3

Dip your finger in the water of one glass, and slowly rub your fingertip around the rim of the wine glass. Be sure you only use a small amount of water, as it is not necessary to use a lot of water to produce sounds. You may need to rub the rim of the glass several times until you produce a vibration along the rim, which will produce the sound.

    • 4

Test the sound of each glass. Since you filled the glasses with different amounts of water, each will produce a different pitch. You can put the glasses in order from least amount of water (highest pitch) to most water (lowest pitch) to make it easier to play them. If you want, you can play each glass to a tuner to discover exactly what note that glass plays. This will make it easier for you to actually play a song on the glasses.

Arrange your glasses so they are easy to reach and begin composing and playing your own music, or play songs you already know. If you need to adjust certain pitches, simply add or remove small amounts of water until you have the correct note.
