How to Remove Fungus From LP Records

Fungus appearing on vinyl LP records is a common occurrence when the records have been stored for an extended period of time without any maintenance. Also, fungus grows easily when moisture seeps into the paper sleeves that records are often preserved in.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the vinyl record with the fungus onto your record player. Turn on a bright enough light to see all the fungus, dust and dirt that are on the record.

    • 2

Slide the brush in a circular motion around one side of the record to wipe off any dust and bits of fungus off of ridges. Wear protective rubber gloves to avoid any contact with the fungus.

    • 3

Spray the vinyl cleaner all over the surface of the record.

    • 4

Turn the record player on at a slow speed at first and use a foam brush to spread the liquid. Turn the speed of the record player up to a 30 or 45 rpm speed to let the liquid dry quickly.

    • 5

Use a soft tissue to remove any excess liquid and make sure the record is fully dry before storing again.

    • 6

Clean the sleeve for the record using a tissue to make sure there is no dust or fungi left in the sleeve.
