How to Use Studio Monitors for Surround Sound

Using studio monitors as surround sound speakers is not the best sonic situation, however it is possible to do so. Studio monitors have a dry balanced sound, with the internal EQ set at zero across the board. While this is necessary in a studio for playback, it is not ideal for a premium audio experience.

Things You'll Need

  • Sound console
  • 2 studio monitors
  • 2 speaker wires
  • 1 RCA cable
  • Electric tape or 4 small wire connectors

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the RCA cable in half. Separate the wires from the rubber coating and strip the wire, leaving about 1/2 inch of copper. Do this to both halves of the RCA cable.

    • 2

Strip the speaker wire using directions above. Attach each speaker wire to an RCA cable. Wrap the connected wire tightly with electrical tape or connect using the wire connectors. Make two complete wires with copper wire at one end and RCA plugs on the other.

    • 3

Place the studio monitors in the back of the room facing the console (CD player/DVD player/amp). Plug the color coded RCA cables into the back of the monitors.

    • 4

Run the speaker cable with the copper wire ends to the console and plug them into slots that say "REAR."

    • 5

Turn on you console and mute all speakers except the rear. After verifying there is sound, turn the balance all to one side, then to the other side, to test that both sides are operating correctly. Un-mute all the speakers and you're done.
