Create a list of essential items in the room that require lighting. Small knobs on rack-mounted processors may be difficult to read without proper lighting. If the items you have listed are located in different areas of your studio, determine the length of track you will need to purchase by measuring the dimensions of each hardware unit you will be illuminating. If your equipment is grouped together, measure the dimensions of the entire collection and purchase a lighting track that will span that length.
Determine what method you will use to power your track lighting. If appearances are not a priority, you can plug the electric cord provided with your rack directly into the wall. When possible, plug your lighting into an electrical outlet that is not supplying power to your audio equipment to avoid the possibility of electrical hum in your recordings. Hum is created by shared electrical impedances, as well as resonating frequencies in the electrical current. If you would prefer a more sophisticated look, consider purchasing an electrical junction box. This device functions as a portable electrical outlet, and will allow you to plug your rack wiring directly into the box to receive power. Consult an electrician before you attempt to install a junction box to avoid the possibility of electric shock or damage to electronic equipment.
Screw your tracks into the ceiling using track mounts. Most track lighting manufacturers sell track mounts designed specifically for the track you have purchased. The instructions provided with your lighting will detail the finer nuances of mounting your track. If you are plugging your track directly into a wall outlet, ensure that the plug can comfortably reach the wall outlet before you finish mounting your rail. If the cord has been pulled taut after being plugged into the wall, you will need to move your track closer to the outlet to avoid damaging your lighting system.
Unplug your track and screw the lightbulbs into the sockets. After screwing in all the bulbs, plug the rack back into the outlet to test your system. If any bulbs fail to light, check the bulb and cord for damage. If problems persist, return your track lighting for a replacement.
Mount the light fixtures you have purchased onto the track. It is recommended that you purchase track light fixtures to prevent harsh glare from naked light bulbs. After mounting the fixtures, position each light wherever you desire, ensuring that your equipment is properly illuminated. If your studio has low ceilings, you may need to forgo light fixtures in order to create a comfortable recording space for vocalists and other performers who record while standing.
