How to Hook Up a Crossover to Amps for a DJ

The best DJs are the ones who are able to exert total control over their sound. This would be easy if there was a perfect amp and set of speakers that reproduced all the frequencies of sound equally well, but that's not the case. A crossover divides an audio signal into high and low frequencies, enabling you to isolate bass and treble sounds and send them through their own dedicated amplifiers. By manipulating your sound with such precision, you can be sure the audience hears exactly what you intend them to hear.

Things You'll Need

  • Crossover
  • Source device (EQ, preamp, compressor, etc.)
  • Power amplifiers(s) (depending on the number of speakers)
  • Speakers
  • TRS or XLR cables

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect your crossover from any power source before connecting anything to it. Make sure your source device and power amp are both turned off.

    • 2

Use TRS or XLR cables to connect the outputs of your source device to the inputs of your crossover. Follow the markings on your devices carefully.

    • 3

Use TRS or XLR cables to connect the inputs of each of your power amps to the appropriate outputs on your crossover. Likewise, connect the outputs of your power amplifiers to the inputs of your speakers.

    • 4

Turn your power amplifiers on, and turn their outputs all the way down.

    • 5

Connect your crossover's power cord to your crossover first, then plug into a grounded power source. Turn your source device on and turn its output level up or down such that you are sending a nominal (average) level to your crossover.

    • 6

Turn up the outputs on each of your power amplifiers and adjust until you achieve your desired volume.
