How to Make Your Own Phonograph With Needle & Paper

Vinyl records do not require electricity to play. Electricity certainly helps---it spins the record at a consistent speed and amplifies the sound coming through the needle---but it is not a prerequisite to playing records. Try disconnecting your speakers from your turntable and playing a record. If you listen closely you will hear the record playing, albeit quietly. Next, unplug the record player and spin the record on the turntable by hand; you will still hear the record play. In fact, phonographs are such simple devices that you can construct your own from paper and a needle.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll a piece of ordinary 8.5- by 11-inch paper into a tight funnel, almost---but not completely---closing off the narrow end. For best results, roll the paper lengthwise, starting with the 8.5-inch side of the paper, to form a long, narrow cone.

    • 2

Apply tape along the seam of the funnel and anywhere else you feel is necessary to keep the cone from unrolling. When you are done taping, your funnel should be fairly sturdy.

    • 3

Tape an ordinary sewing needle to the narrow end of your paper funnel. It does not matter if you tape the needle to the inside or outside of the funnel, as long as it sticks out a half inch or so past the narrow end of the cone. You now have your speaker---the paper funnel---and your phonograph needle.

    • 4

Place a record on a turntable, making sure the turntable can be spun by hand. Guide the record around by placing your hand on the record's center label and spinning it clockwise. For best performance, you will need to be able to spin the record at a steady pace.

    • 5

Hold your paper cone in your non-spinning hand and gently place the needle at a slight angle on the groove of the record. Once you have found the right spot for your needle, you will need to maintain a steady hand, as moving the needle suddenly could cause damage to the record. Spin the record with your other hand, and listen as the record's sound comes out the wide end of your funnel.
