How to Build a Mobile DJ Stage

Deejaying is a popular method of bringing live music to crowds gathered at a wedding, private event, local bar or club, or other location. Some DJs use the most basic of setups at each appearance, often not putting enough thought into how the look of his presentation affects the perspective of his professionalism. If you are a DJ looking to take your show to the next level, you can make a portable stage, complete with a table, even if you do not have a mastery of carpentry.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 sheets plywood, 4 feet by 8 feet
  • 2 wooden shipping pallets
  • 12 corner braces
  • 2 boards, 1 inch by 1 inch by 8 feet
  • Drill
  • Hammer

Instructions

  1. Constructing the DJ Table

    • 1

Use the table saw to cut six pieces of plywood into rectangles measuring 42 inches long by 24 inches wide. These will be your storage units that double as a support system for the table on which you set your turntables, computer and any other equipment you typically bring to a gig.

    • 2

Stand two pieces of the cut plywood together on their ends at a 90-degree angle. Use the carpenter's pencil to mark off three evenly spaced spots. These mark the location to place the braces.

    • 3

Attach the wood together using your drill to drive the screws into place in the braces. Attach the third piece of wood to the other two using the same process. Repeat this process with the remaining three pieces of plywood. You have now completed the frames for your storage cabinets.

    • 4

Use your tape measure to obtain the exact depth of your cabinet frame from the edge of each arm to the back. Cut the 1-inch-by-1-inch boards to match this length, which should be slightly less than 24 inches. Position two of the 1-inch-by-1-inch boards on the inside of the bottom of each cabinet frame so that they are running along the inside edge and flat on the ground. These will be the mounts that hold your shelves in place. Nail the boards into place from the outside of the frame, three nails per board. Measure from the bottom mount to the top of the middle of the cabinet frame, and nail two more 1-inch-by-1-inch boards into place. Measure down two inches from the top, mark the spot with your carpenter's pencil and nail two more 1-inch-by-1-inch boards into place. Repeat this process for the second cabinet frame.

    • 5

Measure the inside dimensions of your storage cabinets, using the area above the top two 1-inch-by-1-inch boards as the model. Cut three pieces of plywood to match this measurement. These will be the shelves for your storage cabinets. Slide each shelf into place; they should rest easily on top of each shelving mount and fit snugly inside the frame.

    • 6

Place a final piece of plywood on top of the storage cabinets, making sure that the edges of the table are about four inches wider than the top of your cabinets. This will be the tabletop where you will place your equipment.

    Building the Stage

    • 7

Lay the two shipping pallets side-by-side flat on the ground, preferably on a concrete surface.

    • 8

Use your hammer to nail one sheet of plywood on top of the wooden pallets. Drive in 10 nails lengthwise and five nails up and down each side. This will serve as your stage.

    • 9

Place your table on top of the stage. You now have a portable DJ setup that is easy to transport to all of your future performances.
