How to Get the Musty Smell Out of Records

Record collectors encounter a couple of different issues when they are purchasing used albums, 45 or 78 speed records at yard sales or estate sales. Outside of the obvious issues of scratches and warped albums is the odor of sitting. Musty odors can penetrate the cardboard covers and record sleeves and actually permeate the vinyl itself. You are able to remove the stench and still be able to enjoy the records and keep them in a protected area.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the record cleaning kit. It will have a solution and a felt brush. Sometimes the solution is kept inside of the handle of the brush.

    • 2

Squirt a line of the solution on one edge of the brush. Drag the brush with the moist side over the record following the grooves. You will be using a circular motion. Use the dry edge to remove the extra impurities.

    • 3

Place the record on one side of the cooler and place the cover and sleeve on the other side of the cooler. Place a piece of parchment paper over the album. This will keep the albums from touching and scratching each other.

    • 4

Open the air freshener to its maximum size. Place it in the middle of the cooler in the open space and place the lid on the cooler. Put the cooler in an area where the temperature will stay consistent at between 68 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit.
