Epiphone Valve Junior Mods for Noise Reduction

The Epiphone Valve Junior is a 5-watt single-ended class-A tube amp with an 8-inch special-design speaker. Despite its 8.5-inch-by-14.25-inch size and single input-channel design, the Valve Junior has quite a reputation for delivering decent tonality and vintage sound. The boutique amplifier is also fairly customizable through modification kits, heads and extensions, and various tube installations.
  1. Modification Kits

    • Modification kits such as the BitMo TRIO provide additional boost control, voicing and gain settings, which aid in noise reduction. The kits come with drilling templates and instructions for modification installation. The only tools needed are pliers, a drill and drill bits, various screwdrivers and a soldering kit.

    Custom Tube Packages

    • Tube amps allow owners to upgrade or swap tube models to change the sound, tonal quality and output. Installing the clean standard upgrade JJECC-83S or JJEL84 tube reduces noise saturation and crystallize the output. By specifically alternating the tube cathode resister values or bypass capacitor, you can relegate frequency response and power crests to reduce excessive volume. Makes sure that you take safety precautions prior to any modifications or installations.

    Attenuators

    • Attenuators regulate amp and speaker communications by maintaining the tone at higher volumes. There are two types: resistive and reactive. Resistive models use high-capacity resistors to displace the speaker load and absorb power. Reactive models use inductance to help the speaker resist noise flooding from the amplifier. Overall, attenuators aid in noise reduction but when used incorrectly can wear down a tube amp.
