How to Create a Wall of Speakers for a Concert

To really push the limits of audio engineering and acoustic power, and take advantage of the sheer scale of a concert hall, and use one's knowledge to make the experience an exciting and musical one, there is always the option of creating a "wall of speakers," in which the speakers are stacked and organized into a veritable wall of sound. Indeed, the Grateful Dead did this very thing in the early 1970s, creating an absurdly huge wall of sound.

Things You'll Need

  • Speaker stands
  • Speakers
  • Powered mixer
  • Monitor speakers
  • Monitor power amplifiers
  • Speaker cables for each speaker and monitor
  • Power amplifier input cables

Begin by setting up the speakers. Remember that speakers on stands are more effective in getting sound out to the audience than placement on the floor itself. Make sure the stands are not behind the stage or blocked by anything on the stage, as this could interfere with the acoustics. Position the speakers on stands and set them up at each side of the stage, in front of the band, so there is no feedback. Raise the stands so that they are at eye level and tighten the speakers into place using lock pins. Carefully, repeat this process for other adjacent speakers on either side of the stage, slowly stacking them on stands and locking them, until two walls of speakers are assembled. Be mindful of the power requirements and the lengths of the speaker cables.

Power up the mixer. If no technician is available, place the mixer on stage. If there is a technician---someone who can monitor and adjust sound levels---place the mixer at the center and back of the concert hall, where the technician will be in the best position possible to handle the audio of the concert.

Set up the speaker monitors on the stage, with the monitors facing in toward where the lead singer will be. The more performers, the more speaker monitors. Put the monitor power amplifier on the side of the stage or next to the mixer, and plug it in. The mixer will adjust power levels, as the amplifier will not require adjustment after being turned on.

Use the speaker cables to connect the speakers. Take one end of the cable and plug it into the speaker output of the mixer, and the other end into the speaker input. Plug the next speaker cable into the speaker output of the power amplifier and the other end into the monitor of the speaker input.

Consult the owner's manual for the sound system to establish which cable to use---standard high or low impedance input cables---to plug the monitor power amplifier into the mixer. Prepare to turn on the speakers by turning down the main volume controls on the mixer and power amplifier. This precautionary measure will prevent the speakers from damaging themselves through a power surge.
