How to Learn Music Vocabulary Terms

It has been said that music is a universal language, but music also has terminologies and a vocabulary all its own. Many words used by musicians are not commonly used anywhere else, and many are derived from foreign languages. If you are taking a music class or simply want to expand your vocabulary of music terms, there are a number of steps you can take to help you learn and remember the terms and their meanings.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit websites, such as w3.gorge.net/mdstg/Musicvocab.htm or murray.k12.ga.us/Teacher/EvelynWright/vocabulary.html, to find lists of common musical terms. If you already have a list of musical terms to learn, this may be unnecessary. You can also choose words from a music dictionary and create your own list.

    • 2

Make flash cards for the music vocabulary terms. Write a musical term on one side of an index card and write the definition on the other side. Make a new card for each word on your list.

    • 3

Read the word from the front of the card and try to repeat its definition from memory. If you do not know the definition, read it and put the card back in the stack. If you do know the definition, take the card out of the stack. Repeat this process until all of the cards are taken out of the stack. Break the cards up into smaller groups at first if you have many new words to learn.

    • 4

Flip the stack over and read the definitions while you try to name the musical term from memory. Reversing the process will help to solidify the terms in your memory.

    • 5

Use your new vocabulary words in conversation as much as possible, or make up sentences that use the vocabulary words. Write the sentences on the back of your flash cards for later reference.

    • 6

Look up new unfamiliar terms in a music dictionary or write down the word to look up later. Add these new words to flash cards and add them to your stack.

    • 7

Review the flash cards as often as possible to retain your learning. After practicing the words, you will find that you can go through the flash cards very quickly.
