Telugu is one of 23 major languages in India and is spoken in the south-central Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The Telugu culture is akin to other cultures of south India such as those that speak the Kannada and Malayalam languages.       Explore the world of Carnatic music, one of the oldest musical forms in the world. It is a complex system composed of 72 melodic scales (ragas) and seven rhythmic cycles (talas). Carnatic music is devotional, or religious, and music from the 19th century by Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Shyama Shastri is still in vogue as traditional or classical devotional music from this area of India. You can read about these forms of music or view and listen to videos on YouTube, or download various forms of Telugu music from websites with specific pages for the Telugu language.

      Watch music videos of Telugu rhythmic folk music. Much of India's music is heavy in rhythm, and this is true of some forms of Telugu folk music as well. Re-create rhythms using tambourines, drums or other rhythmic instruments. This is an activity that children will also enjoy.
