How to Add Internet Music With a Stereo Receiver

Internet radio offers choice and variety beyond anything imaginable a generation ago. You can listen to broadcast streams from stations around the world as well as stations that exist online only, all while enjoying genres that are narrow and focused toward specific interests. Adding Internet streams to a home stereo is possible, allowing you to take advantage of the high fidelity and high power of a carefully chosen sound system.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the length of cable needed to connect your computer to your stereo. Short cable runs ensure the best audio results, but adapter cables of 20 feet or greater are available.

    • 2

Connect the 1/8-inch mini-plug to the sound card output on your computer. For contemporary computers with color-coded sound card jacks, you will use the lime green jack for audio output.

    • 3

Connect the RCA plugs to an empty auxiliary channel on the back of your receiver. You will treat your computer as an audio component, like a CD player, and you will not use the tuner portion of your receiver.

    • 4

Select the auxiliary channel from the front panel of your receiver and adjust your settings for comfortable listening. Adjustment of level from your computer may be needed, and on most computers, this can be done from a speaker icon on the lower right of the screen, otherwise edit your audio hardware settings.
