How to Hook Up Speakers to a PA Mixer

A PA mixer receives the cables from microphones, instruments and recording devices that bring sound into the system for a stage show. The mixing board has knobs for adjusting the levels of all separate sound inputs. A board operator will appropriately mix the sound levels to make certain lead vocals are more prominent than background singing and such. The mixer will contain an amplifier of its own or plug into an amplifier with the power to drive high-wattage PA speakers.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power on the PA mixer. Turn all input and output sound levels on the board down to zero.

    • 2

Plug cables into the outputs on the back of the mixing board. Use the output jacks that accommodate the type of connectors on the cables, whether 1/4 inch or push-in connectors.

    • 3

Plug the other ends of the cables into the input jacks on an amplifier if the PA mixer does not have its own amplifier built in. Plug another set of speaker cables into the outputs on the back of the amplifier. Skip this step if the mixer has a built-in amp.

    • 4

Shut off the power to the PA speakers. Plug a cable from the mixer or connected amplifier into the speaker input jack. Connect one speaker to the left and one to the right channel from the amp or mixer.
