Mozart was born in the city of Salzburg, which was part of the sovereign state of the Archbishopric of Salzburg, in the Holy Roman Empire. He was therefore born a subject of the Holy Roman Empire.

Although Mozart traveled extensively throughout his life and spent a significant amount of time in Vienna, he never changed his citizenship and remained an Austrian citizen until his death.
