Why did Custer choose Garry Owen as his regimental song?

Garry Owen was not Custer's regimental song. "Garry Owen" was the regimental song of the 7th US Cavalry Regiment, but Custer was a member of the 5th Cavalry Regiment. The 5th Cavalry Regiment's regimental song was and remains "The Girl I Left Behind Me."
