Rock mexicano was a revolutionary movement that broke with traditional and romantic song schemes, and that introduced new themes and sounds to the Mexican mainstream. One of its most important figures was Javier Bátiz, who began his musical career in the early 1960s, mixing blues with Mexican folklore.
Also, a key musician for the consolidation of rock was Roberto "El Loco" Valdés, who founded bands like "Los Dug Dug's" and "La Revolución de Emiliano Zapata". But the main pioneer of Mexican rock was Rockdrigo González. His poetic and protest lyrics made him a controversial character in the Mexican society.
Another key year was 1985, as the genre became one of the most important in Mexico. That was the year when Maldita Vecindad, a band formed by members of a theatre company from Mexcio City, released their successful debut album. In those days, Rock in Español was taking part into big festivals like Rock en Rio, and had its own festival too, called: Rock en Tu Idioma.
In 1991, the Mexican band, Mana, released their first hit, "Rayando El Sol". This was the first of a series of albums that would later launch them to international stardom.
