Why did Wagner design the orchestra to be underneath stage of Bayreuth Festspielhaus?

Richard Wagner did not design the orchestra to be underneath the stage of the Bayreuth Festspielhaus; it is placed in a deep, sunken pit in front of the stage, which is referred to as a Festspielhaus pit or sunken orchestra pit.
