In banjo kazooie what were the stop and swap items for?

In *Banjo Kazooie*, stop and swap items were not usable in-game at all. Their primary function was that they could be plugged into any Nintendo 64 controller so a different type of game such as a first-person shooter could make use of their additional buttons if that game supported the Stop n' Swop items.
