What were violin strings made of originally?

Violin strings were originally made of gut, which is the dried and twisted intestines of animals. These gut strings provide a soft and warm sound quality and are more responsive to the player's techniques. While synthetic strings began to replace gut strings gradually, especially for lower strings for their enhanced stability with changes in temperature and humidity and reduced risk of breaking, good-quality natural gut strings are still frequently used especially for professional instruments today.
