How do you tell how long your violin would need to be?

Violins come in different sizes. The size you need depends on your height, arm length, and hand size. Generally, the violin size you need can be determined by measuring the distance between your neck and the middle of your palm, as follows:

1. Relax and stand straight with your arms hanging down comfortably.

2. Bend your left arm at a 90-degree angle as you would hold your violin.

3. Place your left hand on the scroll or pegbox of the violin, with your thumb resting on the highest peg and your fingers extending down the neck.

4. While holding the violin in position, measure the distance from the base of your neck to the middle of your palm on your left hand.

Based on this measurement, you can determine the appropriate violin size:

Violin Size Measurement

1/16 (Smallest) 12 - 13 inches

1/10 13 - 14 inches

1/8 14 - 15 inches

1/4 15 - 16 inches

1/2 16 - 17 inches

3/4 17 - 18 inches

7/8 18 - 19 inches

4/4 19 - 20 inches

If you are between sizes or unsure about which size to choose, it's best to consult with a violin teacher, luthier, or music store specialist who can help you make an informed decision and ensure a comfortable fit.
