Art Activities on the Zoo

A creative way to commemorate a trip the zoo or a fun way to teach children about the animals they are going to see is through art projects. Activities can range from paintings and drawings to masks and puppets. Let the kids use fabric and yarn for more fun.
  1. Paintings and Drawings

    • Create an elephant or a giraffe from each child's hand. Paint the whole hand in tan for a giraffe and the palm and middle finger in gray for an elephant. Turn the paper upside down and you have a giraffe with its head down or the face of an elephant. Create the details with brown and orange for the giraffe or white and black for the elephant. Give each child a drawing of a tree and have children press their thumbs on a brown or black ink pad. Stamp their thumbs twice on top of each other throughout the tree and use markers to turn them into monkeys.

    Masks and Puppets

    • Make lion, tiger or leopard masks by cutting a paper plate in half and tracing holes for the child's eyes and nose. Use curled paper strips around the mask for fur and add detail with crayons, markers or colored pencils. Fold pipe cleaners in half and glue them next to the nose for whiskers. Poke holes in the ears and use string or yarn to tie on the mask. Use a sock to create a zoo animal puppet. Add construction paper to create the face, tail, trunk or horns.
