How do you change a harmonic balancer on 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 L?

Tools and Materials Needed

* Harmonic balancer puller

* Impact wrench

* Chisel or pry bar

* 3/8-inch drive ratchet and socket set

* 1/2-inch drive ratchet and socket set

* Torque wrench

* Replacement harmonic balancer

* Thread locker

* Engine coolant

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Drain the engine coolant.

3. Remove the serpentine belt.

4. Locate the harmonic balancer bolt in the center of the balancer.

5. Use the impact wrench to remove the harmonic balancer bolt.

6. If the bolt is difficult to remove, use a chisel or pry bar to loosen it.

7. Once the bolt is removed, use the harmonic balancer puller to remove the harmonic balancer from the engine.

8. Before installing the new harmonic balancer, clean the crankshaft and the surface of the harmonic balancer that contacts the crankshaft.

9. Apply a thin coat of thread locker to the crankshaft and the surface of the harmonic balancer.

10. Place the new harmonic balancer on the crankshaft and hand-tighten the bolt.

11. Use the impact wrench to tighten the harmonic balancer bolt to the specified torque.

12. Reinstall the serpentine belt.

13. Refill the engine coolant.

14. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

* When removing the harmonic balancer, be careful not to damage the crankshaft or the oil seal.

* If you are having difficulty removing the harmonic balancer, you can use a heat gun or torch to heat up the balancer. This will make it easier to remove.
