What does the vertical accent in piano mean?

In piano music, a vertical accent (also known as a "wedge" or "caret") is a symbol that looks like an upside-down < sign. It is placed above a note to indicate a slight increase in volume and weight for that particular note. The accent should not be overdone, but should still audible without overpowering the music.
