What is a kutibeng musical instrument?

The kutibeng is an African string instrument from Zimbabwe, which is now mainly played by the Shona people. It consists of a hemispherical gourd which is covered with rawhide that has a thin vertical wooden rod sticking out of the gourd. The rod serves as the neck and is fretless, with up to 19 metal wire frets. The strings, which are made of steel or wire, are normally five or six in number and are tied down to the bottom part of the gourd. In order to play the kutibeng, the player holds it on his hands and the neck will be facing upwards. One hand of the player will be around the neck of the instrument while the other hand will pluck the strings.
