What is special about the rhythm of reggae?
Reggae rhythm is characterized by a relaxed, off-beat emphasis on the third beat of every measure. This emphasis is created by playing the bass drum on the third beat and letting the snare drum "rest" on the off-beat. This rhythm gives reggae its distinctive, swinging feel. In addition, reggae often features a syncopated guitar part, often referred to as a "skank," which emphasizes the off-beat even more. This combination of a relaxed bass drum rhythm and syncopated guitar part is what gives reggae its unique sound and feel.
