What is a banjolele?

A banjolele is a hybrid string instrument that combines features of the banjo and the ukulele. It typically has the body of a ukulele, which is usually made of wood, and the neck and strings of a banjo. The strings are typically nylon or steel, and the instrument is tuned like a ukulele (usually GCEA).

The banjolele was invented in the early 20th century and became popular in the 1920s and 1930s, particularly in the United States. It was often used in jazz, folk, and country music, and was played by notable musicians such as George Formby and Harry Reser.

The banjolele has a bright, twangy sound that is similar to a banjo, but with a higher pitch due to its smaller size. It is relatively easy to learn to play, and is often used as a beginner's instrument for those interested in learning the banjo or ukulele.
