Learn about the music. Being emo is centered around the type of music you listen to. Bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and Death Cab for Cutie are often considered emo, but sometimes too mainstream. Check out your local indie music scene to find emo bands you can go see at shows with a low cover fee.
Dye your hair. Emo boys dye their hair either jet black or bleached blond and add streaks of unnatural color like fuchsia pink or fire engine red to set themselves apart from the crowd. Cut and style your hair so your hair is longer in the front, with your bangs covering or coming close to covering one of your eyes.
Dress the part. Emo boys wear lots of black: tight black jeans with T-shirts, which often have band logos or names on them. Studded black belts will round out your outfit. If you want to wear something a little brighter, make it neon.
Put on your makeup. Black eyeliner is a must for emo boys and girls, as is black nail polish. No other makeup is needed; emo boys prefer to stay as pale as possible.
