When did gospel music became popular?

Gospel music originated at the beginning of the 20th century. African-American communities integrated various musical styles such as ragtime, blues and popular music with religious lyrics, creating a new genre of music known as gospel music. It started to gain popularity in the 1930s and 1940s.
