How to Start a Song Using a Pitch Pipe

A pitch pipe is a musical device consisting of a set of valves through which a person can blow in order to hear various pitches. You can use a pitch pipe to tune an instrument, but one of the most common uses is to help a person or group begin a song. The pitch pipe gives a standard frame of reference so the soloists or group can begin on the correct note.

      Identify the first note of the song. If you can't read music, ask someone to help you determine the first note.

      Locate the same note on the pitch pipe.

      Blow into the hole marked as the same note as the first note of your song. Don't blow as hard as you can, as this can distort the pitch. Use a gentle, steady breath as you blow.

      Listen carefully to the pitch as you blow it.

      Match the pitch with your voice as you begin singing the song.
