How to Determine Vocal Ranges

“Pitch” is the quality of sound that defines a sound’s tone in relation to other tones, such as whether the frequency of one tone sounds higher or lower in relation to another. Your “vocal range” is the pitch range your singing voice is able to successfully produce. The most efficient way to determine your vocal range is to practice singing scales. Singing scales is an exercise that calls for you to mimic the pitches of musical notes played on a piano.

Stand in front of your piano or keyboard. If you do not have a piano or keyboard, use the virtual keyboard on the “Table of Musical Pitches” Web page on the Virginia Tech website.

    • 2

Play Middle C in the center of the keyboard. If you are using the Virginia Tech virtual keyboard, Middle C note is yellow. Listen to the pitch quality of the note.

    • 3

Sing the word “La.” As you sing, try to mimic the pitch of Middle C.

    • 4

Play the next note down, the key immediately to the left of Middle C.

    • 5

Sing the word “La” again. Try to match your vocal pitch to the note.
